SLU (6-6) lost a heartbreaker in the last minutes of the game to visiting Kansas State University (11-2) before 22,000+ paid attendees at the TWA Dome. (For more on the Earth Grains Basketball Classic, see The Academic.) Neither team was able to take command of the game yielding the Billikens a small lead for most of the contest. SLU shot just well enough to stay ahead, but missed many outside shots that could have extended their fragile lead. In the last 90 seconds, the Billikens commited a fatal ball handling error that gave KSU the lead and a 67-63 victory.
