Saint Louis University Billikens (4-4) were deep in thought during finals week but managed to overpower the Samford University Bulldogs (3-4) 70-49 at the Chaifetz Arena (reported attendance = 5,986). The Billikens simply shot better than the Bulldogs; a fact that countered the freshman passing mistakes characteristic of this inexperienced team. SLU was able to build a 32-23 first half lead through the efforts of senior guard Tommie Liddell, III. The Billikens were led by Liddell (20 pts), senior guard Kevin Lisch (12 pts), freshman forward Willie Reed (10 pts), and freshman center Brett Thompson (8 pts). Saint Louis shot 55% from the field (39% from 3-pt range) and 69% (9-13) from the charity line. The Bulldogs were led by junior forward Bryan Friday (17 pts), junior guard Trey Montgomery (11 pts), and sophomore guard Josh Bedwell (9 pts). Samford shot 38% from the field (7% from 3-pt range) and 86% (18-21) from the charity line. The Billikens had 32 rebounds (9O, 23D), 17 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocked shots, and 12 turnovers as compared with 18 rebounds (4O, 14D), 5 assists, 5 steals, 0 blocked shots, and 9 turnovers by the Bulldogs.

Samford junior forward Bryan Friday (13) shoots over Liddell on his way to 17 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 turnovers. Bulldogs sophomore guard Josh Bedwell (10) drives inside Billikens freshman guard Kyle Cassity (23). Bedwell finished with 9 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Cassity contributed 5 points, 1 rebound, and 5 assists. Bulldogs junior guard Trey Montgomery (11) scores inside and finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds.

The brothers Lisch listen to Coach Majerus during a second half timeout. Older brother and senior guard Kevin Lisch (21) contributed 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 turnovers. Younger brother Daniel has yet to see any action at home. SLU freshman forward Brian Conklin (14) scores an easy bucket against a team of Bulldogs. Conklin finished with 4 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 turnovers. Billikens freshman forward Willie Reed (33) appears to fly to the basket but is denied by sophomore guard Josh Davis (4). Reed contributed 10 points, 1 assist, and 1 turnover. Davis scored only 3 points and collected 4 rebounds and 2 assists. SLU freshman center Brett Thompson (41) goes for a blocked shot against Samford sophomore guard Josh Bedwell (10). Thompson scored 8 points and collected 4 rebounds.
