Saint Louis University (7-7, 1-0) opened C-USA play with a 67-64 win over visiting University of Houston (6-6, 0-1) in the Savvis Center (reported attendance, 11,793). SLU led at the half 36-28 but were caught by the Cougars with a little more than 9 minutes remaining in the second half. SLU played tough on the inside resulting in a 41-32 rebounding advantage, including 20 offensive boards. Junior guard Marque Perry returned from injury to play 24 minutes and contributed 11 points. Houston was led by senior guard Dominic Smith (1) with 16 points, sophomore guard Kevin Gaines (2) with 14 points, senior center Patrick Okafor (43) with 12 points, and junior forward Jeremee McGuire (5) with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Ross Varner (25) led the Billikens during the first half with 8 points and 6 rebounds.


SLU sophomore guard Jason Edwin (44) led the Billikens with 13 points to go along with his 4 rebounds.

Biilkens junior forward Chris Braun (52) scored 10 points, collected 4 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots. SLU junior center Kenny Brown (41) scored 6 points and collected 7 boards.
